Explore the Bluebell Railway

One of the highlights of staying with us is being so close to the Bluebell Railway. If you haven’t visited before, you’re in for a real treat. Sheffield Park station, dating back to the 1880s, is within a 10 mins drive from The Nest Danehill. Here, you can admire beautifully preserved steam engines and vintage carriages, visit the railway museum and even pick up a unique souvenir in the gift shop.

We love recommending the train ride itself. Travelling along 11 miles of stunning Sussex countryside behind a puffing steam engine is simply unforgettable. It’s one of those experiences that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The Bluebell Railway was one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country, so you’ll get to see some of the finest collections of steam locomotives and carriages, many of which were lovingly restored straight from British Railways. It makes the perfect day out for a romantic date or a family adventure.

Special Events and Memorable Experiences on the Bluebell Railway

One of the things that makes a visit to the Bluebell Railway so special is the variety of events and dining experiences on offer throughout the year. From popular fish and chips evenings enjoyed onboard the beautifully restored carriages, to indulgent afternoon cream teas that feel wonderfully nostalgic, there’s always something a little different to look forward to.

Seasonal events are a real highlight too, with Halloween trains for a spooky family adventure, magical Father Christmas services that delight younger visitors and festive illuminations that bring the railway to life during the winter months.

The railway has also been a sought-after filming location over the years, appearing in television and film productions thanks to its authentic period setting. Notable projects include Downtown Abbey, Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie adaptations. It all adds to the sense that a day at the Bluebell Railway is not just a train ride but a truly memorable experience.

National Trust Sheffield Park and Garden, Just Moments Away

Another much-loved attraction for our guests is the National Trust Sheffield Park and Garden, which sits within an 8 mins drive from The Nest Danehill and pairs beautifully with a visit to the Bluebell Railway. This stunning informal landscaped garden lies five miles east of Haywards Heath and offers a peaceful place to slow down and soak up the beauty of the Sussex countryside.

Originally laid out in the 18th century by Capability Brown, the gardens were later developed into a woodland garden in the early 20th century by its then owner, Arthur Gilstrap Soames. Today, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across ornamental lakes, colourful seasonal planting and tranquil woodland walks that feel wonderfully timeless.

Many of our guests love combining a morning at the National Trust Sheffield Park and Garden with an afternoon on the steam railway, before returning to The Nest Danehill for a relaxed evening in the comfort of the cottage.

There’s plenty to see and do on the railway, from interactive exhibits to special events that delight children and adults alike. We often hear from our guests that a ride on the steam trains is a highlight of their holiday.
